An Eastpointe man was sentenced recently after pleading guilty to shooting his brother in their Eastpointe home.
Last June, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office, McKinnley Hearon shot his brother, Reginald Hearon, who was struggling with violent mental health issues.
Hearon was charged with Second Degree Murder, Tampering with Evidence, and Lying to Police Officers.
Last November, Hearon pled guilty as charged.
After taking into consideration the extenuating circumstances, a potential self-defense claim and the family’s wishes, the prosecutor’s office reached an agreement with the defense attorney for a sentence recommendation within manslaughter guidelines.
Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Julie Gatti approved the agreement and sentenced Hearon to four years in the Michigan Department of Corrections.
Law enforcement and the mother to both the victim and the defendant fully support this resolution.
"The tragic circumstances surrounding this case are heartbreaking, as they involve the loss of a life and the profound impact on a family already grappling with the challenges of mental illness,” said Prosecutor Peter Lucido.
“This was a deeply complex situation, and after careful consideration, all parties involved agreed upon a sentence that reflects both accountability and compassion.“
