Another come back attempt falls short
for C-S boys varsity basketball team
Playing with a lead late in the game is becoming scarce for the Climax-Scotts boys varsity basketball team, and the pattern continued in a Valentine’s Day 57-47 loss to Bellevue at C-S Jr./Sr. High School on Winterfest night.
C-S, losers of its last five games entering a February 19 home non-league game against Kalamazoo Phoenix, falls to 4-14 overall and 2-9 in the SCAA West Division. Bellevue improves to 14-3 overall and 10-2 in the SCAA West Division.
C-S and Bellevue will have a rematch in the district semifinals February 26 at 7 p.m. in the second game of the night at Battle Creek St. Philip.
The Panthers have trailed their opponents entering the fourth quarter in five of the last seven games, overcoming just one of the opponents (Hillsdale Academy).
While C-S once again battled hard to the end once again, turnover challenges that were prevalent earlier in the season returned, with C-S turning the ball over 18 times.
Bellevue’s height advantage proved to be a big difference, especially in the fourth quarter.
The Panthers were outrebounded by Bellevue 31-21, including a 12-4 margin under the offensive glass.

C-S trimmed the deficit to four points four times in the final quarter, the last time with 24.6 seconds left on a Nyle Sattler three-point basket (51-47). However the visitors went 4-for-4 from the free throw line and turned a late C-S turnover into two more points in the final 24.6 seconds.
C-S certainly showed improvement over an earlier 59-38 loss to Bellevue, however both teams struggled to find consistency February 14.
Turnovers dominated the first quarter (Bellevue had 6 and C-S had 2), which ended with C-S leading by a 9-8 margin.
C-S managed just two leads in the game, both coming in the first quarter.
Both teams’ offense picked up in the second quarter, however Bellevue scored six points off of four C-S turnovers and enjoyed multiple opportunities inside on drives through the lane, offensive rebounds and attempts down low for a 22-16 halftime lead.
The two teams traded baskets early in the third quarter, however the Broncos scored back to back baskets for a 32-21 lead with 5:15 left before C-S answered with a Chase VanMiddlesworth basket and a triple by Nyle Sattler to pull the home team to within 32-26 with 3:26 left.
Bellevue took a 36-26 lead into the fourth quarter by scoring the final two baskets of the stanza.
Nyle Sattler led C-S in scoring with 21 points, with all of his points coming on seven three-point baskets. Chase VanMiddlesworth added 11 points.
C-S’ scheduled game at Quincy February 12 was cancelled because of poor weather and will not be made up.

Turnovers costly for Lady Panthers
in 52-45 loss to G-A
With the postseason approaching, the Climax-Scotts girls varsity basketball team is attempting to build some momentum, however Galesburg-Augusta temporarily derailed those plans with a 52-45 win over the Lady Panthers February 17 in a non-league contest at G-A High School.
Turnovers proved to be a big difference for C-S, which turned the ball over 34 times that G-A turned into 15 points.
C-S, now 13-5 overall, got off to a good start, scoring the last seven points of the first quarter for a 14-8 lead.
C-S’ offense stalled in the second quarter, mostly due to 11 turnovers G-A turned into eight points.
C-S also had trouble stopping G-A’s all-time career scorer Jaidyn Klimp, who scored seven of her game high 23 points in the stanza, helping the Lady Rams to a 24-20 lead at halftime.

Klimp, who entered the Delton-Kellogg road game February 21 with 1153 points, proved to be a challenge for the Lady Panthers in the third quarter as well, as the Ram senior scored eight more points, helping G-A to a 38-31 lead entering the fourth quarter.
A basket by C-S’ Addy Reeves with 7:08 left in the fourth quarter pulled the Panthers to within 38-33, but that was the closest the visitors were able to get.
A triple by G-A’s Rhyann Wilson with 5:47 left gave the Rams a double digit lead, 43-33. C-S, behind a full court press, was able to force three Ram turnovers and the visitors scored seven straight points to pull to within 50-43 but C-S ran out of time.
C-S shot 40.4 percent (17-42) overall from the floor that included a 4-for-9 effort from the three-point line, while G-A connected on 34 percent (18-53) and 54 percent (7-13) from the three-point line.
Reeves led C-S in scoring with 21 points to go with 10 rebounds and Sophie Braithwaite and Holly Talbert both added nine points. Holly Talbert, C-S’ leading scorer, scored nine points, joining Kendal Reitz playing through sickness.
After a road game at Mendon February 20, C-S will return home February 21 for a varsity only contest at 6 p.m.
