The Climax-Scotts-Martin co-op wrestling team is returning to the Division 4 Team State Finals at Wings Stadium for the third straight year.

Team Hybrid punched its ticket to the State Finals by posting a 77-5 win over Lawton in the team regional semifinal followed by a 62-17 win over Decatur in the regional championship match February 12 at Decatur High School.

Decatur defeated White Pigeon 41-30 in the other semifinal match.

C-S-M, 25-1, recorded nine pins, one technical fall and won by three forfeits over Lawton.

While there were many competitive bouts against Decatur, C-S-M recorded wins in five out of the first six wins to move in front quickly 27-6.

“We didn’t win the flip, but we got an opportunity to make a move that definitely helped us out. We bumped a guy out of the lineup, but we were able to score some points where we needed to right out of the game. The pins were tough to get. Decatur, they weren’t giving them up. Those guys were battling tough. Can’t be any happier for these guys and how they wrestled. They wrestle for each other. They wrestled for their schools and they wrestle for their communities. It’s fantastic,” adds Reitz.

The local co-op wrestling team could have increased the lead in the 144-pound weight class match, however Martin sophomore Seth Torris was called for an illegal slam. After the Decatur coaching staff declared the wrestler was unable to continue the six points were awarded to Decatur, closing the gap to 27-12.

The momentum was shortlived, as Haylen Buell (150) won by a technical fall (19-3), Jackson Bagley (157) pinned his opponent and Gixxer Blair (165), who was clinging to a 5-4 lead before his opponent got him on his back, quickly escaped and recorded a huge pin to bump C-S-M’s lead to 44-11 to secure the win.

“Gixxer’s a wild kid, man. Doesn’t wrestle any sort of conventional. But he’s got a motor on him and he will wrestle six minutes like nobody else. You can’t ever count him out because more times than one he’s been down and he’ll catch you. He’ll catch you in something funky. Just a wild, funky kid,” said Reitz.
