Boys varsity basketball team falls
to Bellevue in district opener

By Bruce Rolfe

The Climax-Scotts boys varsity basketball team couldn’t overcome too many stretches of cold shooting and Bellevue’s rebounding advantage in a 67-42 district tournament loss to the Broncos February 27 at Battle Creek St. Philip.

C-S finishes the season with a 5-18 record while Bellevue defeated Battle Creek St. Philip 68-55 in the district championship game and took a 16-4 record into the regionals.

Battle Creek Calhoun Christian downed Marshall Academy 56-43 in the quarterfinal game and Battle Creek St. Philip defeated Battle Creek Calhoun Christian in the other semifinal game 64-25.

Overall, C-S shot 29 percent (15-52) from the floor, including a 7-for-20 mark from the three-point line (7-30). The cooler shooting night factored into a huge 48-23 rebounding advantage for Bellevue, including a 17-6 upper hand under the offensive boards.

C-S’ shooting challenges started in the first quarter when the team fell behind 13-6, making just 1-of-7 attempts from two-point range and 1-of-5 three-point attempts. Bellevue also held a 14-5 rebounding advantage under the boards.

While C-S’ shooting picked up in the second quarter, six turnovers allowed Bellevue to enjoy five more two point attempts and the Broncos took advantage of the increased number of shots, knocking down 10-of-17 two-point tries for a 35-18 halftime lead.

Another cold shooting spell in the third quarter put the Panthers in a 47-26 hole entering the final stanza. The team found the range on just 30 percent of its floor attempts, settling for just one three-point basket by Chase VanMiddlesworth and Nyle Sattler along with a two-point basket by Liam LaSala.

Attempting to get back into the game, most of C-S’ attempts in the fourth quarter were from behind the three-point line. While C-S connected on 3-of-5 two-point attempts, the Panthers found the range only twice on 12 attempts from long range. Bellevue’s hot shooting from two-point range (6-for-9) helped the Broncos secure the win.

Nyle Sattler, who had a trio of three-point baskets, led C-S in scoring with 14 points. Dane Sattler, who had 10 points, added eight assists and two blocked shots and Chase VanMiddlesworth contributed nine points, six rebounds, three steals and three assists.
