The postseason recognition continued for five members of the Climax-Scotts-Martin co-op wrestling team at the Individual State Finals last Friday and Saturday at Ford Field in Detroit.
Earning all-state medals with top eight finishes in the Division 4 competition was Martin junior Haylen Buell (144-pound weight class), with a second place medal, C-S senior Logan Gilbert (120) with a third place medal, Martin freshman Urijah Joostberns (113) and Martin senior Jayce Ritchie (138), with fifth place finishes, and C-S senior Sam Bleeker (215), with a seventh place finish.
Cole Reitz (132), with a 1-2 record, Jackson Bagwell (157), with an 0-2 record, and Jakub Tomyslak (165), with an 0-2 record, also wrestled for C-S-M but did not place.
Buell, who earned his 150th career win the previous weekend at the team state finals C-S-M placed second at, started the two-day individual state finals competition with three wins February 28 to move into the championship match the next day.
The Martin junior began the competition with a 17-0 technical fall win over Maple City Glen Lake sophomore Abraham Feeney. He pinned Manchester senior Nathan Meyer in 28 seconds in the quarterfinals and advanced to the championship match by pinning Decatur sophomore Aidan Wiggins in 34 seconds. Buell was defeated by a pin in 5:20 in the championship match by Hudson freshman Beckett Campbell, who wrestled up from 138 pounds the previous week in Hudson’s win over C-S-M in the team championship match,
Buell finishes the season with a 53-5 record.
Gilbert started the competition February 28 with two wins to become the C-S school record holder for career wins. He finishes his career with a 191-21 record, surpassing Jordan Tutt (188-37), who set the school record in 2019.
Gilbert earned a 18-1 technical fall win over Beaverton junior Eric Larson in 4:13 in the first round and a 23-6 technical fall win over Capac senior Ryan Grant in 1:26.
Aspiring to end his career as a state champion, Gilbert lost the opportunity when he dropped a 5-0 decision to St. Louis junior Alex Rodriquez in the semifinals.
Gilbert defeated Rodriguez 9-6 a week earlier in the team semifinals.
Gilbert (120) rebounded to finish the state finals strong, earning a 17-2 technical fall win over Beaverton’s Eric Larson, his first round opponent, in 1:14, and a 15-0 technical fall win over Addison freshman Caden Olsofsky in 2:11.
The C-S senior finishes the season with a 44-6 record.
Joostberns won his first two matches to advance to the semifinals. He opened with a pin over Capac senior Tyler McKenney in 1:17 and won by a disqualification over Holton sophomore Kolli Nichols. The Martin freshman lost to weight class champion St. Louis junior Owen Fogel by a 16-1 technical fall in 5:58. Joostberns lost to Blissfield junior Jude Rosas by a 12-1 major decision, but rebounded to capture a fifth place medal with a 5-2 win over Brown City sophomore Aedyn Pasco.
He finishes the season with a 34-14 record.
Ritchie won his first round match over Vassar senior Robert Dickie by a 19-2 technical fall in 3:08, but lost his quarterfinal match to Riverview Gabriel Richard junior Luke Harrington by a 5-3 decision. The Martin senior rebounded with wins in his next two matches. He defeated Otisville LakeVille Memorial senior Adrian Wing by a pin in 2:17 and earned a 11-2 major decision over St. Louis junior Laythan Haworth. Ritchie was pinned in his fifth match of the competition by Union City senior Logan Mears in 4:27, but he earned a fifth place medal by defeating White Pigeon junior Hunter Pant by a 7-0 decision.
He finishes the season with a 44-16 record.
Bleeker got off to a good start with a 15-3 major decision over Riverview Gabriel Richard junior Anthony Emelue. Bleeker lost to weight class champion Lakeview senior Landen Johnson by a 16-0 technical fall in 4:00. The C-S senior responded with a pin over Marcellus junior Marvin Jones, Jr. in 4:25, but he dropped a 12-4 major decision to Bronson junior Conner Harvey. Bleeker captured a 7th place medal by defeating his first round opponent Anthony Emelue by a pin in 1:22.
Bleeker finishes his season with a 42-16 record.
Reitz lost his opening round match to Lakeview senior Cameron Perez by a 9-3 decision, but bounced back with a pin over Mancelona junior Theodore Parzych in 3:38. The C-S senior was eliminated with a loss to White Pigeon senior Mazzy Lambert by a pin in 2:46.
Reitz finishes his season with a 34-15 record.
Bagwell lost his opening round match to eventual weight class runnerup Jacob Pickford, a Hudson senior, by a 9-3 decision. The C-S senior dropped out of the tournament with a 1-0 loss to Whittemore-Prescott senior Thomas Saunders.
Bagwell finishes with a 38-18 record.
Tomyslak lost his first match to Hudson junior Devon Brigman by a pin in 1:51, and dropped out of the tournament with a 10-1 major decision loss to Traverse City St. Francis senior Beau Belanger. The Martin senior finishes with a 40-22 record.
