Cooley Law School Professor Florise Neville-Ewell was presented with a Great Deeds Award during a ceremony at Cooley’s Auburn Hills Campus on Wednesday, Dec. 22.
The award is given out once a year to a faculty or staff member who demonstrates outstanding commitment to community service.
Neville-Ewell was honored for her work with the TenCore Program and with the Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion, Associate Dean John Nussbaumer noted in remarks at the ceremony.
TenCore is a foreclosure prevention program that provides basic consumer education information to individuals who are at risk of losing their homes to foreclosure, which Neville-Ewell will be discussing with several American Bar Association sections next year.
The professor also worked with the Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion for almost a year to produce the successful regional event hosted at Cooley in October titled “From Redlining to White Flight: The History of Housing Segregation and the Importance of Regionalism.”
For that event Neville-Ewell helped the students prepare the bench memorandum for the justices who heard the oral argument in the re-creation of the case of Milliken v Bradley, and helped them prepare and present a background lesson to approximately 100 students at seven Detroit metropolitan area high schools in the weeks before those students attended the event.
Before joining Cooley Law School, Neville-Ewell was a solo practitioner and represented nonprofits, churches, private entities, entrepreneurs and municipalities involved in mortgage financing and residential and commercial real estate development projects. She previously served as general counsel for the city of Detroit Housing Commission.
Neville-Ewell has also served as a Visiting Professor at Cooley, an Assistant Professor at Wayne State University Law School, Chief of the Contracts Section for the City of Detroit Law Department, and as an associate with Sidley and Austin in Chicago and Honigman, Miller, Schwartz and Cohn in Detroit. She also clerked for the Hon. Julian A. Cook Jr. in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.
At Cooley, the professor teaches Contracts I and professional responsibility.
