Miller Canfield lawyer Tom O’Brien receives award from WCBA
Thomas C. O’Brien, senior counsel in the Ann Arbor office of Miller Canfield was honored with the “Professionalism and Civility in the Practice of Law” Award from the Washtenaw County Bar Association at its Annual Meeting on April 19.

During more than three decades of practice, O’Brien has handled major criminal and civil matters, including cases that received national attention. His criminal practice has included murder trials and white-collar crime, while his civil cases have encompassed catastrophic personal injuries and contract disputes. In addition, he has defended lawyers in malpractice claims. He also has lectured and taught throughout the United States in the field of trial advocacy at the National Institute for Trial Advocacy, the University of Michigan Law School and the Institute of Continuing Legal Education.

He resides in Ann Arbor.

Organizations to pack 50,000th box for Focus: HOPE Saturday
The Incorporated Society of Irish/American Lawyers (ISIAL) and the Catholic Lawyers Society (CLS) will conduct their 21st Service Project Day at the Focus: HOPE Central Warehouse on Saturday, May 5, beginning at 9 a.m. (lasts approximately 2-3 hours).

Focus:  HOPE is a civil and human rights organization that relies on the efforts of volunteers to accomplish its goals.  In the spirit of community service, the  organizations have committed forty volunteers to assist in the packing of food boxes for homebound senior citizens.

The Focus:  HOPE Central Warehouse is located at 1355 Oakman Boulevard in Detroit.  Lunch will be served.  Volunteers are requested to wear their ISIAL t-shirts.

Urban Farming Symposium at U-D Mercy School of Law

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law is co-sponsoring with the Real Property Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan the Second Annual Urban Farming Symposium on Friday, May 18, from 8 a.m. - noon at the school's Riverfront Campus located in Detroit at 651 East Jefferson Avenue. The event is open to the public but will be directed toward the legal community and planning organizations. For additional information or to register, go to www.law.udmercy.edu. Space is limited and reservations are required ($40 general admission and $10 additional fee for a guided walking tour of Detroit's famed Eastern Market).

Society plans 13th Annual Tiger Baseball Outing at Comerica
The Incorporated Society of Irish-American Lawyers will host its 13th Annual Tiger Baseball Outing as the Detroit Tigers take on the Colorado Rockies on Friday, June 15, at 7:05 p.m. at Comerica Park. 

Tickets are $20 and are available on a limited basis—first come, first served.  Reservations and payment must be made by Monday, May 7.
