The Third Circuit Court Civil and Family Divisions will be closed on Monday, Feb. 18, in observance of President’s Day.
In observance of President’s Day, the 36th District Court will be closed to the public on Monday, Feb. 18. Only criminal arraignments will be conducted.
Economists to deliver three year regional jobs forecast at luncheon
University of Michigan economists Dr. George Fulton and Donald Grimes will be giving a three-year snapshot of the regional employment forecast at a luncheon on Thursday, Feb. 21, at the Lapeer Country Club.
The event, sponsored by the seven-county Economic Growth Alliance, begins at noon at the country club located at 3786 Hunt Road in Lapeer. The cost is $15 and is open to the public. Those interested in attending should register by Friday, Feb. 15, at fran@LapeerDevelopment.com or call (810) 667-0080 to register. There is no registration at the door.
The employment forecast—set for years 2013-2015—is the third given by Fulton and Grimes for the EGA. It gives local businesses, educators and government leaders a sense as to where the regional economy is heading and job prospects for the future.
“Fulton and Grimes have been providing valuable economic information for more than 25 years that has helped us shape the economic direction for Oakland County,” Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson said. “I encourage local leaders and the business community to take advantage of this customized forecast that was prepared specifically for the Economic Growth Alliance.”
The EGA, which is comprised of Genesee, Lapeer, Livingston, Macomb, Oakland, Shiawassee and St. Clair counties, was formed in 2009 under Patterson’s leadership in recognition of the region’s influence as an economic unit of interrelated counties whose impact is greater than its individual parts. The alliance represents 3 million residents and more than 73,000 businesses.
Fulton and Grimes represent the U-M Institute for Research on Labor, Employment, and the Economy.
Drum Major for Justice Advocacy Competition to be held Feb. 16
The 21st Annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Drum Major for Justice Advocacy Competition will be held at noon Saturday, Feb. 16, at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, 651 E. Jefferson Avenue, Detroit. Selected 11th and 12th grade students from local schools will compete for more than $25,000 in scholarships. The event is held annually in commemoration of the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and in observance of Black History Month. Admission is free and light refreshments will be served during the reception immediately following the program.
