Firm presents session on assessing current risks in the workplace

Raising the Bar, an educational series raising employer awareness of current issues in employment and labor law and offered by Detroit-based employment law firm Nemeth Burwell, P.C., returns Tuesday, Sept. 24 when the topic will be “Risk Assessment and Prevention: Workplace violence, safety and security.”

According to Patricia Nemeth of Nemeth Burwell, the Risk Assessment and Prevention session presents an opportunity for employers to assess their current workplace risks and response systems and ensure they are also in compliance with current workplace safety laws.

“It is estimated there are up to two million reported incidents of workplace violence in the United States each year, ranging from bullying behavior, to threats and intimidation, to murder,” said Nemeth. “Employers need to be aware of potential security risks in their workplace and ensure they have proper policies and procedures in place that comply with the law and keep employees safe.”

Topics to be covered at the Risk Assessment and Prevention presentation include:

• Investigating workplace violence incidents

• Concealed weapons permits and Stand Your Ground laws in the workplace

• Youth Employment Standards Act: special considerations for minors

• Workplace violence and OSHA’s General Duty Clause

• Physical security and risk assessments in the workplace

• Security rules and the unionized workplace

• Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), accommodations and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance

Raising the Bar will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 24 from 8:30 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. at the Troy Marriott, 200 W. Big Beaver Road, Troy 48084. Continental breakfast will be served at 8:00 a.m. The cost of the event is $60 per person and pre-registration is required.  To register, e-mail Pamela Perkowski  at pperkowski@nemethburwell.com  or call 313-567-5921.
