Burrell selected as co-chair of SBM’s Equal Access Initiative
Dickinson Wright attorney Aaron Burrell has been selected as co-chair of the State Bar of Michigan’s Equal Access Initiative. The Equal Access Initiative develops policies and programs for underserved populations as well as groups with special needs or who face barriers to access.
Burrell is an associate in the firm’s Detroit office. He focuses his practice in the areas of appellate, commercial and business litigation, creditor rights and bankruptcy, labor and employment, middle market business breakups and owner disputes, and minority business enterprises. As a member of the Labor and Employment practice group, he has advised clients regarding compliance with, and disputes involving, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the National Labor Relations Board, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs, the Employee Retirement Income Security Act, and the Michigan Worker’s Disability Act.
Burrell is a member of the State Bar of Michigan’s Representative Assembly for the 3rd Judicial Circuit and is an Oakland County Bar Foundation Fellow. He is also an officer of the D. Augustus Straker Bar Association Board of Directors, and a member of the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association, the Wolverine Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. Mr. Burrell received his B.A., with distinction, from the University of Michigan-Dearborn and his J.D., magna cum laude, from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School.
State’s top appellate lawyer returning to private practice firm
The state of Michigan’s top appellate lawyer is leaving the attorney general’s office for private practice.
John Bursch is stepping down as solicitor general on Dec. 6 and returning to the Warner Norcross & Judd firm in Grand Rapids. He’s argued seven cases at the U.S. Supreme Court, including the recent college affirmative action case, and has often appeared at the Michigan Supreme Court.
Bursch will argue his eighth case in Washington on Dec. 2, a dispute over a casino in Otsego County.
He says the job has “truly been an honor.” Attorney General Bill Schuette says he’ll miss Bursch’s advice.
