The State Bar of Michigan Equal Access Initiative in conjunction with Wayne State University Law School hosted a panel discussion called “Right to Counsel: National Update, Michigan Perspectives” on Tuesday, April 1, at Wayne Law’s Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium. Taking part in the program were (l-r) Joan Howard, chief counsel, Legal Aid &?Defender Association’s Civil Law Group; Gregory Conyers, State Bar of Michigan’s director of diversity; featured panelist John Pollock, coordinator of the National Coalition for a Civil Right to Counsel, Public Justice Center; Maya Watson of Bodman PLC; and Angela Tripp, co-managing attorney, Michigan Poverty Law Program, and project manager, Michigan Legal Help Program. The right to counsel in civil matters continues to be a topic for national discussion. Currently a few jurisdictions are experimenting with providing representation to indigent civil litigants in certain cases. This program provided information about these projects and discussed the landscape in Michigan as it relates to representation of those without the resources to afford legal assistance in civil matters.
