WLAM announces new president of Mid-Michigan Chapter

Amanda Pileggi has been named the new president of the Women Lawyers Association, Mid-Michigan Chapter.

As president of the board, Pileggi will assist in the growth of the mid-Michigan chapter, oversee annual social events and strive to secure the full and equal participation of women in the legal profession throughout mid-Michigan. The Women Lawyers Association of Michigan dates back to 1919, when it was created by five female lawyers. At its inception, emphasis was placed on strengthening professional connections between women attorneys, sharing knowledge, experiences, and information, and mentoring the next generation of up-and-coming female lawyers. Pileggi is a member of Willingham & Coté, P.C.’s Litigation Group.

Her practice focuses on no-fault litigation and insurance coverage. Pileggi completed her law degree at Michigan State University College of Law where she served as a symposium coordinator and team leader for the MSU College of Law International Law Review.

AG Schuette opposes parole changes, OK with other efforts

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette is again opposing “presumptive” parole for prisoners who’ve served their minimum sentence and aren’t deemed a threat to public safety.

Gov. Rick Snyder backs the concept that was the subject of a legislative hearing Tuesday. The legislation would change parole rules so inmates are released after serving their minimum sentence if they’re scored as having a “high probability” for release.

The parole board could still decide against paroling them for “substantial and compelling” reasons. Michigan has 1,900 prisoners who meet the criteria for presumptive parole but remain locked up.

Schuette says the bill would force the release of “violent criminals.”

He says he supports efforts to expand an intensive probation program and require transparency from police who seize people’s property and no charges are filed.
