Society to celebrate legal history at annual membership luncheon

The annual membership luncheon of the Michigan Supreme Court Historical Society will be held on Thursday, April 14, at the Detroit Athletic Club, 241 Madison Avenue. The luncheon will begin with a short reception at 11:30 a.m.

The title of this year’s legal history vignette is “On Michigan Supreme Court Visionaries, or @LoriBuiteweg on @MiSupremeCourt #Drivingchange and #Sbmfuturelaw” by State Bar of Michigan President Lori Buiteweg. Also speaking will be the court’s newest Justice Joan Larsen, who will share memories of recently deceased U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

The luncheon is open to all persons interested in Michigan's legal history. The cost per person is $40; a table for eight can be purchased for $320. For more information or to make reservations, contact Carrie Sampson at (517) 373-7589.

Registrations for the luncheon can be completed online at the Society’s website www.micourthistory.org. Checks payable to MSCHS can be mailed to the Michigan Supreme Court Historical Society, 1st Floor Hall of Justice, 925 W. Ottawa Street, Lansing, Michigan 48915. All payments must be received before April 7.

The Michigan Supreme Court Historical Society was founded in 1988 by then Chief Justice Dorothy Comstock Riley. A nonprofit organization, the Society preserves documents, records, and memorabilia relating to the Michigan Supreme Court. It also produces publications, special events, and other projects consistent with its mission of promoting the study of the history of Michigan’s courts and increasing public awareness of this state’s legal heritage.

Get your child support business in order

Many Courts in Wayne County are offering amnesty on tickets in the upcoming 30 days. This is also a great time to address any child support issues with the Wayne County Friend of the Court.

In fact, The Salvation Army William Booth Legal Aid Clinic will be on hand to assist. In a collaborative effort, Wayne County Friend of the Court is conducting a FREE child support help program on Saturday, April 16 at the Detroit Public Library, 5201 Woodward Ave., in the “Friends Auditorium” from 1–4 p.m.

Attendees will have the chance to sit one-on-one with volunteer family law attorneys, who will assist in completing motion packets and provide some legal direction on child support, parenting time, and custody issues. All services are provided at no costs.

There will be a brief informational session on the importance of being proactive with your child support and paternity issues, as well as introductions to the Third Circuit Court “Specialty Court Dockets.” Child support professionals will be on site to register participants on the MiChildSupport website, and there will be staff dedicated to assisting the public with completing “Michigan State Discharge of Arrearage” packets.

This is an arrest free zone. More 150 people attended the event in October 2015 and received the help they needed.
