Justice Larsen to attend ÂVeterans Treatment Court graduation
Michigan Supreme Court Justice Joan L. Larsen will attend the 17th District Court Veterans Treatment Court and the Veterans Outreach Program of Southeastern Michigan's ceremony to honor 9 graduates May 9.
The 17th District Court launched its Veterans Treatment Court in 2011, and since then, dozens of veterans have participated in the program. In recognition of May being National Military Appreciation Month, MSC is helping to spotlight this program, which assists former servicemen and women who come into contact with the criminal justice system by providing alternative rehabilitation. Participants engage in regular drug and alcohol testing, counseling, and mentorship programs under the strict supervision of the court.
Problem-solving courts focus on nonviolent offenders whose underlying medical and social problems have contributed to recurring contacts with the criminal justice system. Michigan leads the nation with 23 veterans treatment courts.
