Get to Know: Julie L. Williams

Julie L. Williams is an adoption attorney with offices in Farmington Hills and Dearborn.

Williams was born in Inchon, South Korea and adopted when she was three. She is a graduate of Eastern Michigan University and the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing.

Williams primarily focuses her practice on adoption law, and also does probate and estate planning.

Williams and her husband and three sons live in Novi. When she's not in the office, her boys keep her busy, but she also makes time to garden and get out and about.

What would surprise people about your job? A lot of it is necessary paperwork.

What is your most treasured material possession? I'm not very materialistic. I would say it's a bear my husband bought me about 20 years ago from Target.

What do you wish someone would invent? A weight loss machine.

Who is on your guest list for the ideal dinner party? Joan of Arc, Jimmy Carter, my husband, Jennifer Lopez, Princess Diana, Martha Stewart, and Mother Teresa.

If you could trade places with someone for a day, who would that be? Simone Biles.

What's the most awe-inspiring place you've ever been? Homestead Resort.

What is your proudest moment as a lawyer? I had this really complicated single parent adoption, so when the order of adoption was entered on that case, it was awesome.

What does it take to be a family law attorney focusing on adoption? It's like all the other areas of practice, but I believe it takes a certain kind of person to handle these delicate cases. The range of emotions, the parties I work with, knowledge of the law, and my personal experiences all provide an insight not provided to most practitioners in my area of expertise.

What is one thing you'd like to learn to do? Play the violin.

Favorite beverage: Frozen mocha.

Favorite place to spend money: English Gardens and Carson's.

What's your favorite charity and why? St. Vincent de Paul because of their wide range of services.

What three things can you not live without? My family, my practice, and my garden.

What advice do you have for aspiring attorneys? Make meaningful connections with other lawyers and non-lawyers.

What is something most people don't know about you? I am adopted.

If you could choose to do anything for a day, what would it be? See the world, because I haven't traveled outside of Michigan very much.

What is the best advice you ever received? "People do things differently. Remember that your way is not always the best way."

If you can help it, where will you never return? The Star of the Sea orphanage.

What is your motto? "Live for today, because tomorrow may not come."
