Federal judge to receive Humanitarian Award

U.S. District Judge Gerald Rosen will receive the Alvin Foon Humanitarian Award from the Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation (MJSF) on Tuesday, Sept. 27.

The awards ceremony will take place at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield as part of the 2016 Hall of Fame Induction event that evening.

"The Alvin Foon Humanitarian Award was established to honor the memory of one of the MJSF founders and is presented to an individual or individuals for outstanding contributions to athletics and the community," said Sari Cicurel of the MJSF.

Rosen, who served as chief judge of the U.S. District Court for seven years, was appointed to the federal bench in 1990. He served as the chief judicial mediator for the Detroit bankruptcy case, and was the architect of the "grand bargain," which saved the Detroit Institute of Arts and preserved pensions for city retirees.

A graduate of George Washington University Law School, Rosen earned his bachelor's degree from Kalamazoo College, where he was a key member of the varsity tennis team that has been a perennial power. At Oak Park High School, Rosen earned All-State honors at No. 1 singles. He came by his athletic interests naturally, worshiping his late father, Stan, a former minor league baseball players in the farm system of the Chicago Cubs.

In addition to Rosen, other honorees on September 27 will include the Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2016 inductees. They include Mat Ishbia, Kimberly Spaulding Shaw, Michael "Stoney" Stone, and Daniel "Donny" Wohl.

The Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame includes such notables as Tiger great Hank Greenberg, tennis star Aaron Krickstein, broadcaster Eli Zaret, Free Press columnist Mitch Albom, and William Davidson, the late owner of the Detroit Pistons.
