52-1 District Court remains closed through end of week

The 52-1 District Court in Novi will remain closed to the public on Friday but staff will report to conduct criminal arraignments and to answer phones for individuals who have questions about pending cases before the court.

“Out of abundance of caution, the court will remain closed until the boil water alert is over,” 52nd District Court Chief Judge Julie Nicholson said. “Our plan is to resume normal operations on Monday.”

Those with pending cases before the court may call the following numbers from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. if they have questions:

• Criminal Division 248-305-6460

• Civil Division 248-305-6080

• Probation 248-305-6144

• Tickets 248-305-6511

The 52-1 District Court closed Wednesday in response to the effects of the Great Lakes Water Authority water main break on 14 Mile Road.

Michigan House votes to clarify enforceability of prenup agreements

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The Michigan House has approved legislation to clarify the enforcement of prenuptial agreements due to concerns that an appellate court ruling could lead judges to invalidate prenups because assets aren’t apportioned equally.

The bill was approved 63-43 Thursday, with majority Republicans in support and Democrats opposed.

The legislation would add instances when a prenuptial contract is unenforceable. They would include cases of fraud, duress or mistake, or if financial information is hidden from a party before signing.
Courts could not enforce a prenup if its terms are “unconscionable.”

Supporters worry that without the bill, judges could disregard a contract and apply a “standard of living” test to distribute marital property. Critics worry it would prevent judges from fairly looking at the totality of circumstances.

The bill moves to the Senate.
