The Levin Center at Wayne Law will convene top scholars and leaders from around the country on Nov. 10 for a national symposium, “Current Issues in Immigration Law: Detention, ‘Sanctuary Cities’ and the ‘Travel Ban.’”
The symposium, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Wayne State University Law School’s Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium, 471 W. Palmer St., Detroit. Parking is available for $7.75, credit or debit card only, across West Palmer Street from the law school. Three panels and a special lunch discussion on the recent detention of Chaldeans in the Detroit area make up the day-long program. The event kicks off at 8 a.m. with a continental breakfast and check-in.
Symposium moderator Professor Robert M. Ackerman, director of the Levin Center; Wayne Law Dean Richard A. Bierschbach; and former U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, chair of the Levin Center, will provide opening remarks at 8:45 a.m.
Assistant Professor Rachel Settlage, immigration law expert and director of Wayne Law’s clinical education program, will moderate a panel on “Immigration Detention in the United States,” at 9 a.m.
Panelists will be:

• Denise Gilman, University of Texas Austin Law School
• Jamil N. Jaffer, Antonin Scalia Law School, George Mason University
• Anil Kalhan, Drexel University Thomas R. Kline School of Law
Wayne Law Professor Paul Dubinsky will moderate a panel on “Sanctuary Cities: Immigration Law Meets Federalism,” at 10:45 a.m.
Panelists will be:
• Aaron Fellmeth, Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, Arizona State University
• Pratheepan Gulasekaram, Santa Clara University School of Law
• Christopher Lasch, University of Denver Sturm College of Law
• Virgil Wiebe, University of St. Thomas School of Law
Moderating the 12:30 p.m. discussion on “Iraqi Deportations in Detroit: Community Perspectives and Responses,” is Assistant Professor (Clinical) Sabrina Balgamwalla, director of Wayne Law’s Asylum and Immigration Law Clinic.
Panelists will be:
• Susan Reed, Michigan Immigrant Rights Center
• Margo Schlanger, University of Michigan Law School
• Nadine Yousif Kalasho, CODE Legal Aid, Inc.
At 2:15 p.m., Wayne Law Professor Jonathan T. Weinberg will moderate the fourth and final panel on “The President, the Courts and the ‘Travel Ban.’”
Panelists will be:

• Martin Lederman, Georgetown University Law Center
• Jan Ting, Temple University Beasley School of Law
• Shoba Sivaprasad Wadhia, Penn State Law School
The event will adjourn at 4 p.m. following closing remarks.
This is the fourth national symposium for the Levin Center at Wayne Law, which was established in 2015 to inspire and train a new generation to ensure that public and private institutions operate with integrity, transparency and accountability to the general public in honor of former U.S. Sen. Carl Levin’s distinguished career in public service.
