Detroit Mercy Law offers City Year Scholarship aid

University of Detroit Mercy School of Law has partnered with City Year AmeriCorps, a national service organization, to create the City Year National Service Scholarship. Detroit Mercy Law will offer a minimum 25 percent tuition scholarship (or its equivalent) to City Year AmeriCorps members, alumni, and employees admitted to the School of Law.

City Year’s mission is to bridge the gap between the educational and socio-emotional needs of K-12 students and the resources schools are actually able to provide, according to Detroit Mercy Law officials. This gap is often widest in areas of socio-economic distress. City Year deploys more than 3,000 members to approximately 40 school districts nationwide (including Detroit Public Schools), targeting areas where dropout rates are relatively high.

Diverse teams of City Year AmeriCorps members serve full-time in schools alongside teachers, connecting with students and providing support to help students and schools succeed.

“City Year’s commitment to developing its members as civic leaders and advocates of education, particularly in areas of great socioeconomic need, is something we identify strongly with at Detroit Mercy Law,” says Dean Phyllis L. Crocker, who was instrumental in developing the scholarship.

“We have developed partnerships with other pipeline organizations in our community in hopes of improving the educational landscape here in Detroit and paving the way for tomorrow’s leaders,” Crocker says.
“This new scholarship creates an opportunity for City Year AmeriCorps members who have worked and served in Detroit and across the nation to access a more affordable legal education themselves. It offers an incentive for young people to serve through this important program, and allows us to thank them for doing so.”

Scholarships will be awarded to City Year AmeriCorps members and alumni who complete at least one term of service and City Year staff members employed for at least two years. Detroit Mercy Law will permit
admitted students to defer enrollment by one year if they decide to stay with City Year for additional time before beginning their legal studies.

In addition to the 25 percent scholarship for their service or employment with City Year, applicants will be considered for additional merit-based aid based on academic strength, leadership, and other qualities.
Scholarships are renewable in subsequent years of the program up to the completion of the J.D., subject to the renewal criteria for all Detroit Mercy Law scholarships.
