Michigan Supreme Court to hear case in UP

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (AP) — The Michigan Supreme Court is crossing the Mackinac Bridge for the first time.

The court is hearing a case Wednesday in Sault Ste. Marie. Justices schedule arguments outside Lansing during each term, but spokesman John Nevin says a visit to the Upper Peninsula is unprecedented.

The case is a dispute over a golf cart crash in suburban Detroit. Ken Bertin and Doug Mann were playing the 17th hole when Mann struck Bertin, who was injured.

The issue for the Supreme Court is a technical one: Is it a case of ordinary negligence or a higher legal standard known as reckless misconduct?

The case will be heard at 10 a.m. at the Arts Center Auditorium at Lake Superior State University.

There will also be display booths by federal law enforcement agencies and a free legal assistance clinic hosted by local pro bono attorneys. This year there will be approximately 200 high school students participating in the event. A picnic style lunch with hot dogs, chips and cookies will be served to all attendees. This is a free event. Be advised that you must present photo ID to enter the courthouse, and that cell phones are not permitted in the courthouse.

DBA and the Third Judicial Circuit Court to Celebrate Law Day

Law Day is a nationwide celebration of the rule of law, in recognition of how law and the legal process contribute to the freedoms that all Americans share. For the third consecutive year, the Detroit Bar Association and the Third Judicial Circuit Court present this special program for Detroit high school students from over a dozen public, private and charter schools. The program will be held from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 2. Law Day presents a unique opportunity for students to interact with judges and attorneys and learn more about legal careers. Students are invited to participate in an essay contest, scholarship contest, and mock oral arguments before members of the Third Circuit bench. Attorney volunteers are essential to Law Day’s success. Attorneys are needed to review and score essays submitted through the essay contest, as well as to coach students prior to presenting mock oral arguments before the guest judges. Following arguments, volunteer attorneys, judges, and court staff will have lunch with participating students and discuss the particulars of their profession. To volunteer for Law Day, email mkovari@detroit lawyer.org or call (313) 961-6120 ext. 206.
