Detroit City Council honors Cooley student with proclamation
WMU-Cooley Law School student Lanita Carter received a surprise honor while attending Detroit City Council’s May 25 meeting. During the council’s formal session, Carter was presented with the “Millennial Trailblazing to Greatness” proclamation, which was read into the public record by Council President Brenda Jones.
Carter was raised in the city of Detroit and graduated from Davis Aerospace Technical High School in 2007. She earned an associates degree from Baker College and a bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies from Eastern Michigan University. In 2014, she obtained a real estate license and established a real estate investment company with the mission of buying foreclosed homes in her community to help individuals stay in their homes.
Through her work with Diamond in the Rough Real Estate, LLC, Carter works with clients whose homes have became subject to foreclosure. She purchases her clients’ homes from the Wayne County Tax Auction and allows them a second chance to stay in their homes.
Carter took on the role of being a mother figure to her siblings after her mother’s death in 2013. She helped retain and maintain the family home for her and her siblings while working. Carter has a two-year-old daughter, Amara.
54B District Court to host ice cream social
The 54B District Court will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Michigan District Courts with an ice cream social Wednesday, June 20, from 3-5 p.m. in Courtroom 2, 101 Linden St., in East Lansing. The event will be hosted by Chief Judge Andrea Andrews Larkin and District Judge Richard D. Ball.
Metro-Detroit attorney Fred Gregory dies, 88
Fred Gregory, an attorney in the metro-Detroit area, passed away on December 30, 2017. He was 88.
Gregory served honorably in the U.S. Army. He went on to earn undergraduate and law degrees from Wayne State University. Gregory co-founded the school’s Law Review, allowing Juris Doctor degrees in place of LLB’s. Gregory practiced privately, in later years becoming in-house counsel and controller for a development client.
Gregory was pre-deceased by his wife, Nora Gregory, and survived by their three children, Randall Gregory, Russell Gregory and Janis Ann Gregory-Geoffrey.
