Law firm hits the road to help deliver thousands of backpacks
The Mike Morse Law Firm, in partnership with the Detroit Pistons and Orchards Children's Services, hit the road last week to deliver thousands of backpacks and school supplies to grade schoolers throughout the metro Detroit region.
The trip began in Pontiac, Mich., where Mike Morse and Pistons' mascot, Hooper, surprised unsuspecting Alcott Elementary and Walt Whitman Elementary students. The trip continued to Hamtramck and ended at Oak Park Public Schools in Oak Park, Mich. All told, Mike Morse, Hooper, and representatives from Orchards Children's Services, delivered nearly 3,000 backpacks to the following locations:
-Alcott Elementary School in Pontiac;
-Walt Whitman Elementary School in Pontiac;
-Rogers Elementary School in Auburn Hills;
-Owen Elementary School in Pontiac;
-Herrington Elementary School in Pontiac;
-Hamtramck Public Schools
-Oak Park Public Schools
-Roseville Community Schools
"We began Project Backpack several years ago to help students in Detroit get the school supplies they needed to be successful during the school year," said Mike Morse, the firm's founder. "This year we expanded the program with help from Orchards Children's Services, which identified several districts that had children who would benefit from the program. We jumped at the chance to help."
In addition to locating school districts throughout the region for this year's expanded Project Backpack program, Orchards Children's Services helped load and unload the backpacks, and even delivered backpacks to kids in Port Huron Area Schools, located in mid-Michigan.
"We've been aware of the Mike Morse Law Firm's Project Backpack program for years," said Michael Williams, CEO, Orchards Children's Services. "Their commitment to giving kids the tools they need to start the school year right fits perfectly with our creed. We are delighted to be involved this year!"
To help facilitate backpack delivery, Penske Truck Leasing donated a truck for the day-long adventure.
To date, Project Backpack has donated more than 100,000 backpacks to help level the playing field for thousands of grade school kids.
