Wayne Law offers free workshop on Special Education Law


“Special Education Law 101” is a free workshop for parents, guardians and other caregivers of children with disabilities. It will be presented from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Chaney Branch of the Detroit Public Library, 16101 Grand River in Detroit by the Disability Law Clinic at Wayne State University Law School. The workshop is designed to help parents, guardians and other caregivers of children with disabilities understand and protect their children’s rights under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Topics addressed will include evaluation and eligibility; special education and related services; free appropriate public education; least restrictive environment; individualized education plans; and complaints, due process hearings and other procedural safeguards. The workshop is free to attend and advance registration is requested but not required. Register at dlc@wayne.edu. The Disability Law Clinic is a law office at Wayne State University Law School, staffed by second- and third-year law students working under the supervision of a professor who is a licensed Michigan attorney. The clinic provides free legal help to Detroit-area residents with disabilities in non-criminal matters related to their disabilities (e.g. disability civil rights, special education, health insurance coverage, guardianship/conservatorship, Social Security Disability Insurance/SSI).

Seminar for New Lawyers: Navigating Your Way in State and Federal Court Dec. 4-5
 

Join the Federal Bar Association Eastern District of Michigan in conjunction with the Young Lawyers Section of the State Bar of Michigan for the 43rd Annual New Lawyer Seminar on Tuesday and Wednesday, December 4 and 5 at the Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse, 231 W. Lafayette Blvd. in Detroit. Receive practice tips and real-world advice about law, procedure and strategy from Michigan’s top lawyers and judges. Registration and networking begin at 8:30 a.m. and the seminar is from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Following the first day of the seminar on December 4, there will be a mass swearing-in ceremony to gain admission to practice in the Eastern District of Michigan. The fee for the seminar is $125 per person, which includes the two-day seminar, presentation materials, luncheon, and one-year local chapter membership. Register at fbamich.org.

 

Black Women Lawyers Association of Michigan Cocktail Sip Fundraiser
 

The Black Women Lawyers Association of Michigan (BWLAM) is hosting its annual Cocktail Sip Fundraiser from 6-11 p.m. Thursday, December 13 at the home of the Honorable Terrance A. Keith in Detroit. This event is a party with a purpose. BWLAM holds the event to raise money for foster children and scholarships. Tickets are $35 and are available for purchase at https://www.womenlawyers.org.
