Wayne Law clinic charity doubles goal, helps 10 families

Jessica Lennon, left, a social work intern with Wayne Law’s Legal Advocacy for People with Cancer Clinic, and Kathryn Smolinski, director of the clinic, show off some of the items donated as part of the Winter Wishes drive to help 10 families who are clients of the clinic.

Ten Families, including five children and 16 adults, will have a brighter holiday season thanks to a donation drive supported by students, faculty, staff and friends of Wayne State University Law School.

The goal – to provide $6,000 worth of goods to families – was more than doubled for a total of $13,498.77 worth of gifts donated.

The Winter Wishes program is in its seventh year of helping clients of Wayne Law’s Legal Advocacy for People with Cancer Clinic. This year’s program brought in more than 392 donated items including winter clothes, boots, blankets, bathrobes, gift cards, hats, toys, televisions and other products.

The program is part of a semester capstone project for the clinic’s designated social work intern through WSU’s master of social work program. This year that student was Jessica Lennon of Detroit. Lennon was supervised by Assistant Professor (Clinical) Kathryn M. Smolinski, who is founder and director of the clinic.

Donations to the program were accepted through Nov. 30. The clinic also had a hot food bar fundraiser sponsored by LaPita Fresh and accepted donations for a gift basket drawing. Wayne Law’s Student Board of Governors donated Law School apparel and provided a monetary contribution to support one of the gift baskets. In addition to support from members of the Wayne Law community, the School of Social Work and PA Solutions in Warren also adopted families this year.
