Third Circuit Court announces courtroom assignment changes


The Third Circuit Court is providing notice of the following courtroom assignment changes:

— Family Division – Domestic Relations Section, Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, Two Woodward Ave., Detroit, MI 48226:

• Judge Richard Halloran retired and his docket has been reassigned to Judge Carla Testani. Judge Testani is located courtroom, courtroom 1511.

• Judge Connie Marie Kelley is retiring.  Effective January 11, 2019,  Judge Mary Beth Kelly will hear all matters assigned to Judge Kelley’s docket until the vacancy is filled. Judge Mary Beth Kelly is located in courtroom 1913.

— Criminal Division, Frank Murphy Hall of Justice, 1441 St. Antoine Street, Detroit, Michigan 48226:

• Judge Bridget Mary Hathaway is located in courtroom 401.

• Judge Regina Thomas is located in courtroom 701.

• Judge Presiding Judge Prentis Edwards, Jr., is located in courtroom 602.

— Family Division – Juvenile Section, 1025 East Forest Avenue, Detroit, Michigan 48207:

Justice Ginsburg missing Supreme Court arguments for 1st time


WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court says Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is missing arguments for the first time in more than 25 years as she recuperates from cancer surgery last month.

Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said Monday the 85-year-old Ginsburg is continuing to recuperate and work from home after doctors removed two cancerous growths from her left lung odn Dec. 21.

Ginsburg was discharged from a New York hospital on Christmas day.

Ginsburg had two earlier cancer surgeries in 1999 and 2009 that did not cause her to miss court sessions. She also has broken ribs on at least two occasions.

The court said doctors found the growths on Ginsburg’s lung when she was being treated for fractured ribs she suffered in a fall at her office on Nov. 7.

 

Former Uber driver pleads guilty to  6 murders in 2016


KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — A man charged with killing six strangers between picking up rides for Uber has pleaded guilty to murder in southwestern Michigan.

Jason Dalton’s surprise guilty pleas occurred as lawyers and a judge planned to pick a jury Monday in Kalamazoo County court.

Dalton was charged with murder and attempted murder. He admits shooting eight people in three locations in the Kalamazoo area in 2016.

After Dalton’s arrest, police quoted him as saying a “devil figure” on Uber’s app was controlling him on the day of the shootings.
