Trump to nominate Davis to fill Rosen seat on federal bench

President Donald Trump on Friday announced his intent to nominate U.S. Magistrate Judge Stephanie Dawkins Davis to serve as district judge on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, filling a vacancy created two years ago when Judge Gerald Rosen took senior status.

Davis is the first African-American woman Trump has chosen for the federal bench.

Before being selected as a magistrate judge in 2016, Davis served 18 years as an assistant U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of Michigan, including as executive assistant U.S. Attorney and as a deputy unit chief of the Controlled Substances Unit. Before joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Davis was an attorney in private practice. She began her career in products liability and commercial litigation at Dickinson, Wright PLLC, where she was mentored by future Michigan Supreme Court Justice Mary Beth Kelly.

Davis received her J.D. from Washington University in St. Louis School of Law and her B.S. from Wichita State University.

In 2015, she won a 2015 “Champion of Justice” award from the State Bar of Michigan for going “above and beyond” the call of duty as a federal prosecutor.

Davis has been married for 26 years and has three adult children.

In addition to announcing his intent to nominate Davis, Trump identified three other judicial nominees, including Michigan attorney Michael S. Bogren to serve as District Judge on the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan.

Bogren is chairman of Plunkett Cooney P.C.’s board of directors and the managing partner in the firm’s Kalamazoo office. His practice focuses on representing municipalities in both federal and state courts, including First Amendment, zoning, and employment matters. He also serves as village attorney for the Village of Hopkins.

Bogren received his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Detroit School of Law and his B.A., cum laude, from Western Michigan University.
