State Rep. speaks to law students about careers in politics

State Representative Kara Hope of Michigan’s 67th House District spoke with WMU-Cooley Law School students who have an interest in politics on Friday, June 7. Hope, a graduate of WMU-Cooley, discussed her career path and current legislation she is working on.

 Hope shared how being an attorney has helped her hit the ground running as a state representative.

 “Lawyers tend to be logical and fact oriented,” said Hope. “It’s always part of what we are doing even if you are not consciously thinking about it. Whether you are doing estate planning, or criminal law, you are involved in politics.”

 Hope began her legal career as a pre-hearing attorney with the Michigan Court of Appeals. She started a solo law practice in 2015, specializing in family law and began volunteering on a local environmental issue. Before running for the State House seat she was elected to the Ingham County Board of Commissioners in 2012.
