WMU-Cooley launches Kimble Center for Legal Drafting with seminar
The newly created Kimble Center for Legal Drafting at WMU-Cooley Law School will hold its first public seminar on Friday, November 1, at the law school’s Lansing campus and live streamed at WMU-Cooley’s Auburn Hills, Grand Rapids, and Tampa Bay, Florida campuses (CLE credits available for Florida attorneys). The seminar is free to attorneys and students. Three legal-drafting experts, WMU-Cooley Professor Mark Cooney, Professor Emeritus Joseph Kimble, and Attorney Jeffrey Ammon of Miller Johnson will present a four-hour program that will be useful to attorneys who draft legal documents (rules, wills and trusts, business and real-estate documents, bylaws, and other).
Program Agenda:
• 8:30-9:45 a.m. – Professor Mark Cooney: Attacking Old Forms and Rethinking Document Design
• 9:45-11:15 a.m. – Professor Joseph Kimble: Recognizing and Avoiding Ambiguity–the Worst Sin in Drafting
• 11:15 a.m. -12:30 p.m. – Attorney Jeffrey Ammon: Redrafting Indemnities and Other Terms of Art for Clarity.

The Kimble Center for Legal Drafting’s main mission is to produce and make available—to attorneys and consumers—legal documents that are clear and easily understandable, documents unlike anything that the public is used to seeing from attorneys.
The center is named for distinguished professor emeritus Joseph Kimble, an internationally recognized expert on plain language and legal drafting. Kimble taught legal research and writing at WMU–Cooley for more than 30 years and serves as a drafting consultant to the Standing Committee on Federal Court Rules. His work in restyling the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and the Federal Rules of Evidence earned him two prestigious Burton Awards for Reform in Law. Kimble has authored three books on the value and practice of plain language in law and government, and has edited the Michigan Bar Journal’s “Plain Language” column for three decades.
Board to host free screening of film for Women’s Suffrage centennial
The Oakland County Board of Commissioners’ Celebration of Women’s Suffrage Ad Hoc Committee, in partnership with the League of Women Voters Oakland Area, is hosting a free screening of the film “Iron Jawed Angels” on Monday, Oct. 14, at 6:30 p.m. at Emagine Royal Oak Theatre, located at 200 N. Main Street in Royal Oak.
“Iron Jawed Angels” (2004) is a film about the American women’s suffrage movement during the 1910s. The film follows political activists Alice Paul (Hilary Swank) and Lucy Burns (Frances O’Connor) as they use peaceful and effective strategies to revolutionize the American feminist movement.
