Wayne State announces minor in law program

Wayne State University Law School, in partnership with the Mike Ilitch School of Business, the School of Social Work, and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, is launching a minor in law program for undergraduate WSU students beginning in winter semester 2020.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to work with our partners in launching this exciting new endeavor,” said Wayne Law Dean Richard A. Bierschbach.

“The program—which represents an innovative collaboration between different academic units at Wayne State—will give students an edge no matter what field of study they are pursuing.”

This program seeks to develop in students the skills traditionally associated with “thinking like a lawyer”—logical and critical thinking, oral and written communication, and reading comprehension and analysis. By doing so, it prepares them for the increasing number of desirable career opportunities with some legal component or nexus—like jobs in state and local government, immigration, social work, human resources, compliance, business, finance and consulting. It also gives students who might be curious about a legal education a chance to get their feet wet with actual law classes designed specifically for undergraduates.

Three different law minors will be available to undergraduate students—one through the Mike Ilitch School of Business, one through the School of Social Work, and one through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Each will involve the same three core courses in law taught by Wayne Law professors, but will have other course requirements that vary depending on the minor. Two of the core courses in law will be offered in winter 2020—Law and Harm and Legal Procedure. Students will be able to register for these courses when registration opens in late October.

Any undergraduate student who wishes to take one of the law courses without completing the minor is welcome to do so.
