‘Racism and the Jews’ topic of Sept. 3 program
A program titled “Racism and the Jews: History, Conscience and the Future” will be offered via Zoom on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m., featuring Susannah Heschel, chair of the Jewish Studies Program at Dartmouth College.
“Is rising anti-semitism a species of racism or ‘hate,’ or is it a separate phenomenon?” asks a spokesperson for the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, which is sponsoring the program along with the Coalition for Black and Jewish Unity and the Jewish Community Relations Council. “The program will feature a clip from ‘Shared Legacies,’ which features lessons of Black-Jewish cooperation and a discussion with a new generation of Black leaders.”
Susannah Heschel, daughter of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, is the Eli M. Black Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Jewish Studies Program at Dartmouth. Her scholarship focuses on the history of Jewish and Protestant religious thought in Germany during the 19th and 20th centuries, and she has brought post-colonial theory and feminist theory to her analyses. She is the author of numerous books and articles, and she also has edited two volumes of her father’s writings, including “Moral Grandeur and Spiritual Audacity: Writings of Abraham Joshua Heschel.”

Volunteer attorneys needed for Constitution Day event Sept. 17
Volunteer attorneys are needed to help with the Constitution Day program presented on September 17 by Judge Michael Warren of the Oakland County Circuit Court.
Judge Warren and the Constitution Day Committee will be hosting more than 300 high school and middle school students from across Oakland County via Zoom on September 17 from 9-10 a.m.
“The committee is looking for 40-plus volunteer attorneys to assist with the program via Zoom with groups of five to eight students,” said a spokesperson for the Oakland County Bar Association. “Through individual Zoom rooms, the attorneys will assist their individual group of students on formulating an argument to support their designated position on a factual case scenario. Two students in each group will then present oral arguments on the case before an Oakland County Circuit Court judge or a visiting judge, and the judge will render an opinion.
The attorneys are provided all of the material in advance and there is no research or much preparation involved.”
Detailed instructions and assignments will be e-mailed to the volunteer attorneys two weeks in advance. Attorneys can volunteer by contacting Karen Koshen, court resource and program specialist, at koshenk@oakgov.com or (248) 858-0296 by August 30.
