Pfizer to break ground on new Michigan production facility

PORTAGE, Mich. (AP) — Pfizer is expected to start building a new pharmaceutical production facility in western Michigan.

The drugmaker will break ground Wednesday on the multi-story, 420,000-square-foot (39,019-square-meter) building on Pfizer’s global manufacturing campus in Portage, MLive.com  reported.

It is expected to bring 450 new jobs to the area. The $465 million facility is expected to be in operation in 2025, according to Pfizer.

The new facility will initially manufacture the pain medicine known as Dynastat, which is supplied to several international countries, Pfizer said.

Pfizer worked with German partner company BioNTech to create a COVID-19 vaccine that won U.S. regulatory approval last year.

Portage offered Pfizer a 50% property tax abatement to construct the new facility there.

In 2018, the Michigan Strategic Fund Board approved an $11.5 million package, including $10.5 million in tax incentives and a $1 million grant for the creation of the qualified new jobs. Average pay was expected to range from $70,100 to $93,300.

Portage is about 140 miles (225 kilometers) west of Detroit.

Bringing new jobs to Portage and the surrounding area positively impacts other industries such as restaurants, retail and housing, City Manager Joe La Margo said.

“It’s a positive for the entire community, for the entire region,” he added. “Pfizer is a great community partner. We’re happy they are continuing to invest in the city of Portage.”

Wayne Law continues its rise in U.S. News & World Report rankings

Wayne State University Law School has jumped 28 spots in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Law School rankings over the last four years — to No. 72 in the country – and again is the second-highest ranked law school in Michigan. Wayne Law also ranked No. 24 in part-time law programs, the best in the state and No. 3 in the Midwest.

Wayne Law is Detroit’s only public law school and consistently has the lowest tuition in the state. It is No. 1 in Michigan for overall bar pass rate, with 90 percent of test-takers passing the July exam. The National Jurist and preLaw magazines have ranked Wayne Law a Best Value Law School for seven consecutive years.

The U.S. News & World Report rankings for law schools are based on a weighted average of 20 measures of quality, with peer assessment and five individual measures making up placement success receiving the most weight.

Other analysis areas include incoming 1L median LSAT scores and undergraduate GPAs, acceptance rate, and reputational assessments by practicing lawyers and judges.

New this year, U.S. News & World Report analyzed graduate indebtedness. Separate specialty rankings are determined based on peer reviews by law school faculty who teach in each area.
