Detroit Mercy Law student awarded A. Vince Colella Civil Rights Scholarship

On May 18, Vince Colella had the honor of meeting second year Detroit Mercy Law student Allison Koltunchik, the 2021 recipient of the A. Vince Colella Civil Rights Scholarship.

Colella, a co-founder of personal injury and civil rights law firm Moss & Colella, established the annual scholarship at his alma mater in 2019 to help support and encourage Detroit Mercy Law students who demonstrate academic excellence and have a profound interest in joining the fight against social and racial injustice.

Koltunchik, who holds an undergraduate degree in criminal justice from Michigan State University and will graduate from Detroit Mercy Law in Spring 2022, is the first in her extended family to attend law school.  Outside of the classroom, Koltunchik serves as Vice President of Lawyers Lending Hands, a community service organization that helps fundraise for local organizations. She has also  worked for a local firm specializing in social security disability insurance law.

Colella received his Juris Doctorate from Detroit Mercy Law in 1993 and is a trailblazer in the new era of civil rights, directing public sector accountability to a new level for the purpose of citizens’ legal protections.

“It is an honor to contribute to Allison Koltunchik’s legal education, both financially and as a mentor. The importance of the legal profession’s work in civil rights increases daily, and I’m confident Allison will ultimately provide important legal contributions to assure equal protection under the law.”
