Wayne State University Law School congratulates first-year student Nadia Igram on her recent first-place finish at the State Bar of Michigan Law Student Section 1L Oral Advocacy Competition. Igram achieved the highest cumulative score over four rounds of competition, placing above 59 competitors from other area law schools.
First-year student Jyarland Daniels Jones had an impressive finish as well, achieving the rank of “Distinguished Competitor” for placing among the top 10 competitors. Wayne Law student Nadia Hamade also competed in the competition.
The purpose of the competition is to give first-year law students the opportunity to practice their oral argument skills prior to their first in-school competition. Students are asked to address a legal issue by composing and delivering an oral argument for each position.
“I congratulate Ms. Igram and Ms. Jones on their remarkable achievements,” said Wayne Law Dean Robert M. Ackerman. “Their performance at this competition exemplifies the excellence of Wayne Law students. I am confident that we’ll be hearing more of their successes as they complete their legal education and become practitioners.”
The 2010 1L Oral Advocacy Competition problem focused on the public trust doctrine and how far the scope of public usage rights should extend after the Michigan Supreme Court case of Glass v. Goeckel.
“I attribute my success in the competition in large part to the professors I have had who have helped strengthen the skills and tools I needed for this accomplishment, such as Legal Research and Writing Professor Aimee Bacik,” Igram said. “Jyarland and I are also particularly grateful to Professor Dolan. The issue of the public trust doctrine and the seminal case were covered in our Property class, which gave us an advantage that set us apart from the other competitors. This is just another example of how a Wayne Law education has allowed us to excel.”
