Flint ACLU to honor civil libertarians

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Greater Flint Branch is honoring three civil rights and civil libertarians at its Annual Dinner Meeting at the Flint Golf Club, 3100 Lakewood Drive, Flint, MI, on Thursday, September 22, 2011, at 6:00 p.m. C.

Frederick Robinson, Carl L. Bekofske, and Olof S. Karlstrom have been trailblazers in the Genesee County legal community on issues that affect the lives of the disadvantaged. The honoring of these men for the Thomas A. Baltus Libertarian of the Year is well overdue.

Robinson’s award, unfortunately, is posthumous; he died on June 18, 2011. During Robinson’s life, he steadfastly fought against racism and inequality and was instrumental in causing Flint to pass one of this country’s first open housing ordinances.

Bekofske served on the Board of Directors and the Legal Committee of the Greater Flint ACLU. He advanced the causes of civil liberties as an advocate in civil and criminal litigation and public policy.

Karlstrom served on the Board of Directors and the Legal Committee of the Greater Flint ACLU. His advocacy in litigation and public policy advanced the equal rights of women and minorities.

The legal work that Robinson, Bekofske and Karlstrom undertook epitomizes the meaning of the civil libertarian. Their intelligence, dedication, creativity and sense of justice compelled them to improve the lives of those who were less fortunate and the victims of discrimination.

The Keynote Speaker for the Dinner is Professor Virginia Rezmierski of the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor. She will speak on the subject of “Electronic Privacy Under Assault,” Professor Rezmierski is renowed for her work in public policy and information.

Tickets for the dinner are $35.00 per person and can be obtained for purchase at www.aclumich.org or you can contact Gregory Gibbs, 810-239-9470; Glenn Simmington, 810-600-4211; Muna Jondy, 810-820-8691; Orene Bryant, 810-257-0430 at ext. 225; or Jodi Hemingway, 810-287-4058.
