David Leyton, Genesee County Prosecutor since 2005, was elected as President of the Board of Directors of the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan (PAAM), the association announced recently. He will serve a one-year term through August 2013.
Prosecuting attorneys from around the state of Michigan recognized Leyton for his commitment to the citizens of Genesee County and his expertise and integrity in prosecution.
Saginaw County Prosecutor Mike Thomas stated, “The choice of Genesee County Prosecuting Attorney David Leyton as PAAM’s new President continues PAAM’s tradition of selecting leaders who exemplify integrity, honesty and a commitment to protecting the rights of crime victims in Michigan. David personally leads a talented staff in one of the most challenged, under-resourced jurisdictions in Michigan. He is the right Prosecutor at the right time for our association.”
“David Leyton is a dedicated prosecutor who has demonstrated the passion and vision necessary to provide effective leadership for the prosecutors of Michigan. His commitment to provide meaningful support to crime victims is an inspiration to all Michigan prosecutors,” said Livingston County Prosecutor David Morse.
Attorney General Bill Schuette added, “I look forward to working with David Leyton during his tenure as president of PAAM. This is a great selection by a very important law and order organization. David is a personal friend and will do an outstanding job.”
Leyton, who has already declared the theme of his presidency as “Justice for All,” also weighed in on his new position.
“I am honored to be elected by my fellow prosecutors from across the State to help lead an organization that is dedicated to seeking justice for crime victims and ensuring the public’s safety,” Leyton said. “PAAM plays an important role in law enforcement by offering educational training programs for assistant prosecutors, providing critical information to the legislature and executive branch regarding criminal justice system issues, and by serving as the cohesive voice for prosecutors from all 83 counties in Michigan on matters of public safety.”
The newly elected President Leyton will be accompanied by his fellow prosecuting attorneys in the following officer positions: Kym Worthy, Wayne County Prosecuting Attorney, was elected President elect; Victor Fitz, Prosecuting Attorney in Cass County was elected Vice President; and Mike Wendling, St. Clair County Prosecuting Attorney, was elected Secretary/Treasurer.
The Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan was established in 1929. It is a voluntary association of all 83 of the state’s Prosecuting Attorneys, the Attorney General, and the U.S. Attorneys serving in Michigan. Its primary purposes are to promote fair, swift and equal justice in enforcing the state’s criminal laws, and the continuing education of Prosecuting Attorneys and other law enforcement officials.
