Claressa Shields named honorary Judge Marable Student of the Month

Flint 68th District Judge Herman Marable, Jr. announced last Saturday that Olympic Gold Medalist boxer Claressa Shields has been selected as an Honorary Judge Marable Student of the Month. The announcement was made at the Flint Schools Back to School Rally during a ceremony where Shields was saluted by school, and elected officials held at Perani Arena on September 15.

Shields is a senior at Flint Northwestern High School. She was given the honorary designation because of her decision to return home and continue her education. In making the presentation, Judge Marable explained that while she was a great athlete, and ambassador for Flint, and had made history at the Olympics, she was setting an example for youth in our community. “I know that Claressa has received many offers, and opportunities that she no doubt will have because she won the gold, yet she has set an example for youth by enrolling in her school.” said Judge Marable. “99.99 percent of our young people will achieve their success by completing their education”.

The Judge Marable Student of the Month/Year program was established in 2004 by Judge Marable and his Citizens Advisory Committee to encourage Flint area high school students to focus on academic achievement and career goals. Each month during the school year a 10th grade student is recognized and awarded a $75.00 savings bond, trophy, and certificate based on the completion of an application and essay about their career goals. One of the monthly awardees from the school year will be selected as Judge Marable’s Student of the Year and will receive a $500.00 savings bond.

Tenth grade students who are Flint or Genesee County residents are eligible to apply for the Judge Marable Student of the Month/Year Award. Further information on the Judge Marable Student of the Month/Year Award and applications are available from high school guidance counselors, principals, or from the www.judgemarable.net website or by calling (810) 597-7795.
