The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute has received a donation of $10,000 from Birmingham-based law firm Williams, Williams, Rattner and Plunkett, P.C. (WWRP), in celebration of the firm’s 40th anniversary.
R. Jamison “Rick” Williams, managing partner of WWRP, took a recent tour of Karmanos Cancer Institute, viewing one of the Institute’s newest clinics, the Dresner Family Clinic for Hematologic Malignancies and Stem Cell Transplantation.
“As a law firm, we looked at whole range of organizations that provide different services to the community,” Williams said. “We chose to give back to Karmanos because two of our own original co-founders passed away from cancer. We have a strong interest in supporting the fight against cancer and we thought our contribution would help to advance the progress that has been made at Karmanos in cancer research.”
During the tour, Williams met with Charles Schiffer, M.D., leader of Karmanos’ Malignant Hematology Multidisciplinary Team. Dr. Schiffer is a world-renowned oncologist who has been a pioneer in furthering research and treatments for those who are suffering from malignant blood disorders.
“I was blown away by what I saw during the tour,” Williams said. “There is so much technology and so many smart people who work at Karmanos. The facility is so warm and comfortable. Karmanos truly provides a professional and compassionate level of care in a technologically-advanced setting.”
Nick Karmanos, senior vice president for Institutional Relations at Karmanos, joined Williams on the tour and said he was pleased that the Institute’s mission aligns with WWRP’s commitment to giving back to the community.
“We are gratified that WWRP chose to single out the Karmanos Cancer Institute for their philanthropic efforts,” Karmanos said. “We see more than 6,000 newly-diagnosed patients each year and offer them the very best in cancer care, a result of the ground-breaking research that goes on each day at Karmanos. WWRP’s kind support means that we can sustain that reputation of comprehensive cancer care not typically found at other centers. We thank WWRP for their generosity.”
The donation is part of an overall gift of $40,000. WWRP has not only donated to Karmanos, the law firm has provided $10,000 each to the Birmingham Community House, Grace Centers of Hope and the Oakland County Bar Foundation.
