Flint Southwestern Classical Academy junior Charlie Bingham elected governor of Michigan Youth in Government

 Charlie Bingham, a junior at Flint Southwestern Classical Academy, was elected Governor of Michigan Youth in Government.  He was elected by more than 700 peers from across the State at the four-day Youth in Government conference held in Lansing, Michigan. 


Interim Superintendent, Larry Watkins, said, “The mission of the Flint Community Schools is to develop students who will contribute to the success of our ever-changing society. Charlie Bingham is the epitome of that mission.” 
Flint School Board President Isaiah Oliver added, “This is a great opportunity for Charlie to not only gain valuable experience on a state and national level, but to showcase his talents at these levels. Everyone in the district is very proud.”

Conference participants were instructed to look for the following qualities when considering the candidates for governor:

1. Recognized leadership ability in a candidate

2. Recognized good citizenship and an ability to be civically     engaged

3. Knows the importance of good appearance, dress and poise

Southwestern Principal Cheryl Tate, said “Charlie is a born leader. He is passionate about being involved in both school and the community. He takes his education very seriously and always encourages his classmates to live up to their potential.”

Duties of Governor
In addition to state-wide duties, the youth governor attends the National youth Governor’s Conference in Washington, D.C. this summer. He has the opportunity to meet the President, cabinet officers, senators, representatives, Supreme Court justices, and other government officials. The youth governor also has the opportunity to attend the YMCA’s conference on National Affairs held at Black Mountain in North Carolina.

Other duties include: Speak at YMCA Leadership conferences; attend & speak at Michigan Manufacturers Association leadership breakfast consisting of Senators and Representatives and business leaders from around the state; attend and speak at the annual Legislative Appreciation Breakfast; and attend the Conference on National Affairs as delegation leader.

About Michigan Youth in Government Michigan Youth in Government is a State YMCA program in which nearly 2,000 high school & middle school students learn first-hand about politics and their state governmental processes and how their judicial system operates. It has been recognized by Governor Rick Snyder, former Governor Jennifer Granholm, former Governor John Engler, former Governor James J. Blanchard, former President Gerald R. Ford, and several other state and national leaders in government and business. 

Students interested in the politics of governmental and legislative processes engage in activities related to those fields. They campaign for house and senate seats, and the office of governor. They propose, sponsor, and garner support for legislation involving issues of current interest. In addition, students interested in journalism follow the campaigns closely, track the proposed legislation, conduct candidate interviews, and publish all the late breaking political news to the student body.
