The Judge Marable Student of the Month program will continue to accept applicants through June 27, 2020 even though schools are closed for the rest of the 2019-2020 school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Judge Herman Marable Jr. of the 67th District Court indicated that while schools are closed, students who would have applied to participate in the program should not be denied the opportunity to participate.
Marable said: “I think that by now students may be a bit bored. Since the students are home, they have plenty of time to write an essay about their career goals and apply. We will waive the requirement that they have to get a letter of good standing from their school.”
Marable indicated that other components of the program, such as the student visit to Michigan State University, award presentation ceremonies, and courtroom job shadowing opportunities will be postponed until a later time.
“We know that the virus has impacted everybody in some way, and we hope and pray that there will be better days ahead when we can celebrate our deserving youth,” Marable said. “This is one small thing we can do to lessen the impact of COVID-19 on some of our kids.”
The Student of the Month/Year program was established by Judge Marable and his Citizens Advisory Committee in 2004 to encourage Genesee County high school students to focus on academic achievement and career goals. Each month during the school year a 10th grade student is recognized and awarded a $75 cash prize, trophy, and certificate based on the completion of an application and essay about their career goals. After the end of the school year, one of the monthly awardees will be selected as Student of the Year and will receive a $500 prize.
Tenth grade students who are Genesee County residents, or who attend public, charter, private, or home schools located in the county are eligible to apply for the Judge Marable Student of the Month/Year Award.
