Cooley seeks nominations for Hilligan Award

The Marion Hilligan Public Service Award is given annually to recognize contributions by a lawyer in public service to area governmental bodies or community organizations, reflecting greater individual responsibility in promoting public health and welfare through law. The purposes of the award are to promote among the bar and public a greater appreciation of the contributions lawyers make to governmental bodies and community organizations, and to foster among lawyers greater individual responsibility for service to those bodies and organizations.

The award criteria include the candidate’s board membership and other appointments and service, length of service, time expended, skills exercised, and general perseverance, innovation, foresight, and success in developing, promoting, and sustaining the mission of the governmental bodies or community organizations served. Compensated (career) and volunteer candidates are eligible.

Nominations can be made via e-mail to either Nelson Miller, millern@cooley.edu or to CJ Kruska at kruskac@cooley.edu

GRBA Young Lawyers mentorship program

The Grand Rapids Bar Association (GRBA) with the help of the Young Lawyers Section is formalizing a mentorship program. The Young Lawyers Section will match new attorneys who may not have mentors available to them through their firms, and those who are solo practitioners, with more experienced attorneys.

The aim of formalizing this program is two-fold. First, GRBA will provide a significant benefit to its newest members who are in need of, and otherwise would not receive, mentoring. Second, with the assistance of the more seasoned attorneys, we will ensure the next generation of attorneys become strong advocates and good attorneys, while maintaining the collegial atmosphere in which Grand Rapids lawyers have always enjoyed practicing.

In order to provide this integral service to our members, we need the help of more seasoned attorneys.  The Bar is looking for seasoned attorneys who are willing to mentor new attorneys.

If you would be willing to serve in the role of mentor, please contact YLS Chair Jim Oppenhuizen at joppenhuizen@kalawgr.com or 616-364-2100.
