The Grand Rapids Bar Association has been honored as a Diversity Champion by Corp! magazine for its Managing Partners Diversity Collaborative action plan.

The magazine’s annual “Salute to Diversity” issue, now in its sixth year, features Michigan companies and organizations that have made a strong commitment to diversity.
The Grand Rapids Bar Association was recognized for its role in developing a five-year action plan that brought together 13 law firms to work together to increase diversity
in the legal community in West Michigan.

Corp! honorees are selected based on significant achievements in a specific category as well as a demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion, and contributions to diversity issues in business and the community.

The GRBA launched the Managing Partners Diversity Collaborative in March 2012, gathering the managing partners of West Michigan’s leading law firms focused on increasing diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. The Collaborative has developed a five-year plan to address three critical issues that face the Bar Association and member firms:

—Increasing the number of attorneys of color;

—Improving the rate of retention and advancement of both female and minority; and

—Expanding the pipeline of persons of color who enter law school and the profession.

The Collaborative’ s signatory firms are: Barnes & Thornburg LLP, Clark Hill PLC, Dickinson Wright PLLC, Dykema, Foster Swift Collins and Smith PC, Mika Meyers Beckett & Jones, Miller Canfield, Miller Johnson, Price Heneveld LLP, Rhoades McKee PC, Smith Haughey Rice & Roegge, Varnum LLP and Warner Norcross & Judd LLP.

The action plan also establishes three committees focused on pipeline development, recruitment and retention, then lays out specific steps that each will take.

Honorees will be featured in the July/August 2012 issue of Corp!

and will receive the award during a special celebration on August 28 in Detroit.
