Legal Foodies hold Detroit workshop

The Agricultural Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan conducted a “Detroit Food Entrepreneur Legal Workshop” on Thursday, July 30, at Wayne State University Law School’s Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights. Among those taking part in the workshop were (seated, l-r) Judy Herman, Nick Leonard, and Lisa McCraw; (standing) Anna DeWall, Ed Berk, Bina Joshi, Chris Curran, Monica Rios, Brad Donovan, Julie Rosales, and Davin Reust. “This event is really meant to be a resource to the food community in Detroit as a whole because there is just this whole community of people in Detroit that are focused on creating these food community based businesses, non-profit organizations, in order to sort of make a more equitable and just food system with local accountability and local control,” said Nick Leonard, an Equal Justice Works Fellow with the Great Lakes Environmental Law Center who provides legal services to individuals, non-profits, and for-profits involved in urban agriculture in Detroit for no cost. Those attending learned about the legal issues that may impact their organizations and businesses which they did not know about because of not having access to legal services.
