Michigan residents gave generously to food drive at Secretary of State offices

2015 Harvest Gathering food collection totaled 7 tons of food

Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson has issued a statement thanking customers and staff for their generosity during the 2015 Harvest Gathering food drive.

“Both our customers and our staff donated food and funds to help their neighbors in need this fall, donating seven tons of groceries to area food banks,” Johnson said. “I am tremendously proud of how they have stepped up during a season of giving to share what they have with others.”

Statewide, Secretary of State offices collected almost $1,500 and more than 14,000 pounds of food across the state. Customers also mailed additional funds directly to the Food Bank Council of Michigan.

As in past years, the Sparta office ranked first in food collection, bringing in more than 8,500 pounds of food, while the Northeast Wayne County PLUS Office in Redford Township brought in more than 311 pounds and the Secretary of State Building at the state Secondary Complex brought in 632 pounds of food.

Harvest Gathering collection boxes were placed in Secretary of State offices and state office buildings during the fall food drive.

The department has been participating in the Harvest Gathering campaign, co-founded by Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, since 1999. The 2014 SOS campaign raised $8,900 and almost 15,000 pounds of food.

The campaign is coordinated by the Food Bank Council of Michigan, which supplies the state’s regional food banks through donations of food and money. The regional food banks serve food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters in every Michigan county.

The statewide Michigan Harvest Gathering 2015 campaign collected 300,000 pounds (150 tons) of food and more than $381,000. For more information about Harvest Gathering, visit the Food Bank Council of Michigan website at www.fbcmich.org.
