Chief Justice Markman comments on Joan Larsen, Kurtis Wilder

Following are two statement s from Michigan Supreme Court (MSC) Chief Justice Stephen Markman, the first regarding the appointment of MSC current Justice Joan Larsen’s nomination appointment to the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and the second on the appointment of the new justice to fill the vacancy resulting from the retirement of Justice Robert Young.

“Justice Joan Larsen has brought to the Michigan Supreme Court a lifetime dedicated to legal scholarship, regard for our Constitution, and abiding respect for the rule of law. While today’s nomination by the President is a well-deserved recognition of these attributes, Joan nonetheless will be missed by her colleagues who have very much enjoyed working with her on behalf of the people of Michigan. We plan to take full advantage of her judicial insights and contributions until she is finally confirmed by the United States Senate.”

Governor Snyder appointed Court of Appeals Judge Kurtis Wilder to fill the open seat on the MSC left by its former Chief Justice Young. Judge Wilders was an Engler appointee in 1998 who was elected in 2000 and re-elected three times since then.

Before that Judge Wilder was with the Washtenaw County Circuit Court, serving as chief judge, who  had previously been with the law firms Foster, Swift, Collins and Smith in Lansing and Butzel Long in Detroit.

Chief Justice Markman commented, “My colleagues and I are extremely pleased to welcome Judge Kurt Wilder to the  Michigan Supreme Court.  Judge Wilder brings a quarter century of experience on the trial and appellate courts of this state.  Equally important, he brings what has been a consistent commitment to the equal rule of law and unwavering support for the  values  of  the  constitutions  of  the  United  States  and  the  State  of  Michigan.

“Governor  Snyder  and  all  of  the  people  of  our  state  can  take  great  pride  in  this appointment.”
