ICBA seeks nominations for annual awards

Gubbins Legal News On the evening of November 2, 2011, the members of the Ingham County Bar Association will meet for a gala evening at the Country Club of Lansing for their annual dinner and to honor the best in their profession. Each year ICBA presents the Camille S. Abood Distinguished Volunteer Award, Theodore W. Swift Civility Award, Leo A. Farhat Outstanding Attorney Award and Thomas E. Brennan, Sr. Lifetime Achievement. Nominations for the awards are due by 5 p.m September 29, 2011. The Camille S. Abood Distinguished Volunteer Award is presented to ICBA members who have made voluntary contributions of time and talent for the benefit of others. The services recognized may or may not be law related and can be given to any volunteer service whether or not it happens to involve the Lansing area community. Last year's winner was Janice K. Cunningham. The Theodore W. Swift Civility Award recognizes skill and success in practicing law while at the same time demonstrating that civility and collegiality may contribute to overall and long-term success. The committee may consider a broad range of factors including such qualities as promptness, common courtesy, sense of humor, fairness in scheduling events and treatment of witnesses, judges, court personnel and adversaries. Last year's winner was R. Bruce Carruthers. In 2010, Max R. Hoffman was presented the Leo A. Farhat Outstanding Attorney Award, which is given to lawyers who exhibit excellent qualities in the practice of law, provide outstanding service to the public, and who maintain a balance for professional excellence with the joy of family and friends. Such person is also recognized for his/her openness and humility, a sincere concern for the interests of others including the professional development of newer lawyers. The Thomas E. Brennan, Sr. Lifetime Achievement Award may be given in any one year, however it is given only in those years when an exceptionally worthy recipient has been nominated. It is awarded to lawyers who have made significant and longstanding contribution to the advancement or betterment of the legal profession. The 2010 winner was Joe E. Foster. The Liberty Bell Award recognizes outstanding service performed by a non-lawyer citizen who has given time and energy to strengthen the effectiveness or the American system of justice. Such services can include encouraging a respect for the law and the courts, promoting a better understanding of our Constitution and Bill of Rights and fostering an appreciation for the rule of law. The Awards Committee, appointed by Scott Mandell, ICBA president, will accept electronically submitted nominations, which may be made by members or non-members of the bar, however, the nominee must be an ICBA member.
