Ingham County reports lowest number of Sheriff's Deeds in 5 Years

MASON, MI--Ingham County Treasurer Eric Schertzing and Register of Deeds Curtis Hertel reported recently that the number of Sheriff's Deed filings in Ingham County for 2011 compared to 2010 improved by 18.1%. In 2011 there were 1,467 sheriff's deed filings a drop from the 1,792 filings in 2010. The 2011 filings were also the lowest since 2006. In the mortgage foreclosure process, a sheriff's deed starts a redemption period for the property. Ingham County Register of Deeds Curtis Hertel said, "While serious challenges remain, in terms of sheriff's deed filings - 2011 was the best year out of the last five years." Hertel also said people "who are having trouble making mortgage payments should call 211 or go to www.holdontoyourhome.org for a referral to a financial counselor." "This is great news. The impact of predatory mortgage products and joblessness, however, is still with us. The economy is slowly moving in the right direction," said Ingham County Treasurer Eric Schertzing. 2011 Existing home sales activity: Schertzing reported that December 2011 ended "with our 36th sale of a new or fully renovated home. This is over 50% above the 2010 total of 21. And we had sales activity in November and December that should bring at least 5 closings in early 2012." He advised interested parties to check out the current listings at www.inghamlandbank.org, or look for the monthly ad in the City Pulse. "The grand opening," said Schertzing, "of the NEO Center and new Kincaid-Henry offices at 934 Clark Street in conjunction with our Holiday Party was a grand affair. Over 300 folks joined us December 8th to see this wonderful neighborhood asset in Northtown. Incubator space is available(www.neocenter.org ). Schertzing is the Board Chair for Capital Area Community Services. He plans to help raise awareness of the Penny for Power program with the Board of Water and Light (remember to round up your bill) and the Walk for Warmth event.
