Professor founds organization to help military families
DETROIT, MI--Having a family member in the military is challenging enough. Without the support of friends who know what you're going through, there are times when it can be almost unbearable.
When Associate Professor of Law Jocelyn Benson's husband, a paratrooper in the Army, deployed, she wanted to help others in her situation feel more connected. "As a military spouse, I know that our community is scattered throughout the state. With no main active duty base in Michigan, family members can feel isolated and alone," she said.
Benson's idea to build a network of support and services for those families led her to found Military Spouses of Michigan (MSM). "I wanted our courageous military spouses in Michigan to be comforted by one simple promise: You are not alone."
MSM provides free legal advice and representation, information about education and employment opportunities, details about important state and federal changes or developments that could affect military families, and programs on financial issues. MSM also hosts social gatherings--everything from potluck dinners and movie nights to birthday parties and anniversary celebrations--to help bring families together and share their experiences in a fun way.
"We believe that one of the greatest needs of our Michigan military spouse community is the simplest: building meaningful relationships with each other and our community," Benson said. "The response to this has been almost overwhelming."
