Grass Lake Sanctuary receives grant

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Mid-Michigan Affiliate ® recently awarded a grant of $75,130 to Grass Lake Sanctuary in Manchester. The grant will provide women breast cancer survivors a 3-day stay at a 145-acre retreat center and nature preserve. This program helps to empower a community of survivor leaders that support and nurture a culture of wellness in southeast Michigan. G.L.S. will serve 80 women between the ages of 25 and 80 who have completed treatment. The program primarily addresses the sense of isolation and disconnect that can follow medical treatment. "There will be lots of relationship building in the company of women who understand what you are going through, " said Tom Egan, Executive Director of Grass Lake Sanctuary. "There will also be the opportunity to de-stress and rejuvenate as you connect with nature, eat foods for health and enjoy therapeutic massage," he said. "This program is about pampering every cell of the body," said Chris Morgan, Director of the Women's Wellness Programs. Scholarships will be available for low-income, underserved or underinsured women. Eligible participants will come from seven counties. These are: Washtenaw, Ingham, Eaton, Clinton, Jackson, Livingston and Shiawassee. The retreat opportunities for the year 2012 are as follows: June 22-24, June 29-July 1, July 20-22, July 27-29 or August 10-12. One may register online at http://grasslakesanctuary.org. I thank the Komen Mid-Michigan Affiliate for the opportunity to reach these women," said Mr. Egan. This is the third year that G.L.S will serve breast cancer survivors. The Mid-Michigan Affiliate brought grants to G.L.S. for 2011 and now 2012. The first year brought a pilot program, which served eight breast cancer survivors. This took place thanks to a grant from the James A. and Faith Knight Foundation. Published: Thu, May 3, 2012
