Spencer Abraham addresses students

LANSING, MI, March 28, 2013--Former U.S. Secretary of Energy and former United States Senator Spencer Abraham spoke during the 59th Annual National Conference of Law Reviews on March 21. The conference was held at Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Mich. Abraham's presentation included an audience of nearly 250 students from 62 different law schools, who are active in their schools' law review publications. Abraham started Cooley's Law Review in 1981, and also taught Torts and Legal Research for the law school. "Having Secretary Abraham speak at the conference was uplifting," said Bradley Charles, Cooley Law School professor and chair of the National Conference of Law Reviews. "He helped the students understand their work on law reviews is important. And he was very entertaining as well." Abraham addressed several topics during his speech. The first topic was themed around living an exceptional life and was demonstrated through Abraham's personal experience as a U.S. Senator. He explained how his political disagreements with Senator Ted Kennedy later led him to have a personal friendship with Kennedy. He engaged the students with a second topic involving the idea that people change and evolve over time and related this experience to when he co-sponsored a bill in 1994 to abolish the Department of Energy, the same department he was asked to head up by President George W. Bush six years later. Abraham finished his presentation by providing the students with tips to improve law reviews through strategic writing skills. Some of the speakers at the program included: Bryan Garner, the prolific author and founder of LawProse and editor of Black's Law Dictionary; artist Joe Castillo, a SandStory Artist and finalist from the television show America's Got Talent; Laura Innes, Emmy award-winning actress; Frank Wagner, former reporter of decisions, U.S. Supreme Court; Judge Richard F. Suhrheinrich, senior judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit; Justice Stephen J. Markman, Michigan Supreme Court; Judge Jane Markey, Michigan Third District Court of Appeals The National Conference of Law Reviews gives law review editors an opportunity to share ideas and discuss issues related to student-edited law publications. The annual conference includes panels of faculty advisers, law review editors and academic authors. Conference attendees have the opportunity to hear from various members of the legal community, meet with publishing editors and socialize with diverse groups of law review editors.
