Cooley Law School’s Sixty Plus, Inc., Elderlaw Clinic (Sixty Plus) received a $10,000 grant from the Capitol Region Community Foundation. The grant will allow Sixty Plus to continue to provide legal assistance to senior citizens in the Lansing community. Sixty Plus provides legal services for individuals needing assistance with protective proceedings, housing, consumer protection, wills and estate planning, and family law.
“We are thankful for the support from the Capitol Region Community Foundation,” said Kimberly O’Leary, director of Cooley’s Sixty Plus clinic. “The senior population struggles with protecting their rights and it is important that resources be available to support their needs.”
The foundation’s support will allow Sixty Plus to extend outreach into special populations that have traditionally not been aware of free legal services for seniors. Cooley students, faculty and staff will actively increase the amount of services available to African American and Spanish-speaking elderly.
A portion of the grant will be used to pay outreach specialists, Cooley graduate Tracey Yarborough and Cooley students Penelope Williams and Jennifer Gallardo, to work directly in the community at events such as the Cristo Rey annual fiesta.
“We will print brochures in Spanish and have better coordinated services with Elder Law of Michigan and Legal Services of South Central Michigan,” said O’Leary. “Together, our agencies provide a comprehensive range of free legal services to many seniors.”
Sixty Plus provides legal help to persons 60 years of age or older, primarily in Ingham, Eaton and Clinton counties.
